Regions of Greece
Attica
Attica is a peninsula reaching into the Aegean Sea and is one of the most historically significant areas of ancient Greece, with some settlements dating back to prehistoric times. Many temples and sacred centers are found in Attika, including: the Parthenon of Athens, Eleusis, Marathon, Brauron, and Sounio.
Epirus
Epirus (‘Ηπειρος) is a region in the northwest corner of Greece, and hosts two of the most important oracles of the ancient Greek world: Dodona and Necromanteion. Relatively remote due to its unique geography, the region is also home to one of the deepest gorges in the world, as well as Acheron, the mythic (and very real) river of the Underworld.
Macedonia
Macedonia (Μακεδονία) is a sprawling region of incredible beauty in northern Greece. Like most of the country, the area is a combination of mountain landscapes and fertile valleys, lush forests and flowing rivers, lakes and coastland marshes. I lived for many years in Eastern Macedonia and was able to travel quite extensively throughout the region, so this area holds a particularly special place in my heart.
Peloponnese
The Peloponnese (Πελοπόννησος) is one of the most archaeologically significant regions of Greece, home to the sacred and ancient sites of Epidaurus, Corinth, Olympia, Mycenae, Messini, Sparta, and more. Beyond its classical heritage, there are exquisite Byzantine centers to explore, such as Monemvasia and Mystras, not to mention its outstanding natural beauty and awe-inspiring horizons of verdant mountains and vibrant, blue waters.
Sterea Ellada
Also known as Central Greece, Sterea Ellada (Στερεά Ελλάδα) is home to some of the most well-known temples and sites of ancient Greece, including the ancient oracles of Delphi and Trophonios, Thebes, and Thermopylae. Several myths originate or take place in the region, including the myth of Narcissus and Echo, the story of Dionysos and Semele, the birth of Heracles, and more.
Thessaly
Thessaly (Θεσσαλία) is a region in central Greece graced with fertile plains, river-fed valleys, and the tallest mountain of Greece—the mythic Mount Olympus. The birthplace of the Muses, Chiron the Centaur, and the healing god Asclepius, the region is also known for its stunning rock formations at Meteora and countless hiking trails rich with medicinal herbs.
Thrace
Thrace (Θράκη) is a region in northwestern Greece of stunning beauty and one of the most important areas for migratory birds and birds of prey in Europe. Home to Orpheus, the mystic bard of ancient Greece, as well as a cradle for the Dionysian mysteries, Thrace is a liminal land at the crossroads of several cultures.
