The Maenads Are Calling to You.
The Maenads: Raving Nymphs of the Wild
The Maenads are nymphs of Dionysos, the god of viticulture and ecstasy. Their name literally means “raving ones” and they enter divine trance states via intoxication and movement.
The Maenads are wild dancers; they move to the intrinsic rhythm of the deep earth. In ancient art, they are most often depicted bearing a thyrsus (a Giant Fennel stalk wrapped in Ivy), wearing deer or fawn skin, crowned with Ivy wreaths or bull helms, and handling or donning serpents. Unlike the other nymphs, the Maenads are said to be humans who are wholly transformed by their frenzied devotion, leaving behind social etiquette and “proper behavior” to become primal and free.
If the Maenads are calling to you, it may be time to revel in your Humanness and Celebrate the Animal Within. Divine madness and the breakdown of social norms are their gifts; they do not shy away from the aspects of themselves deemed “inappropriate” by society. As such, the Maenads have much to teach you about letting go and finding freedom through the body. Keep reading below to discover how you can deepen your communion with the Maenads and invite them into your daily practices and ceremonies.

Where to Seek the Maenads
The Maenads are most at home in places in nature, far from society — mountain forests being one of their favorite spots — but you will also sense them in any spaces governed by wildness, uninhibited joy, or divine intoxication. You may also wish to seek their essence in your fellow humans; look for dancers, trance workers, and artists who channel ecstasy and subvert social norms. Or, better yet, become one yourself.
How to Connect with the Maenads
Visit a forest, preferably on a mountainside, and stay still and quiet for a few moments. If necessary, close your eyes. Listen to the sounds of the forest around you. Seek out its rhythm, the combined pulses of the soil, trees, plants, fungi, and creatures that surround you. Allow your body to respond, to move, to stretch, to shake, to dance. Delight in the spontaneous movement as you add your own pulse to the rhythm of the forest.
Freestyle dance to music that allows you to let go of any rules, expectations, or judgments. Stretch. Shake. Bounce. Move your body without following a choreography. Dance for pure sensual pleasure, not performance. Celebrate your untamed nature.
Get on the ground or floor. Roll. Slither. Shimmy. Slide. Let go and feel your earthen connection, your serpentine nature.
Commune with an animal familiar and seek to embody their essence in your movement and ritual, especially the serpent, deer, bull, or goat. Wear masks and don costumes that help you inhabit their animal nature. Dance as though you were possessed by the animal.
Use the Plant Familiars workbook to deepen your intimacy with the Ivy and Grape, two vines particularly sacred to the Maenads. Learn the art of viticulture and craft your own sacred ritual wines.
Decorate your altar with items sacred to the Maenads: Ivy, Grape, and Pine cones; representations of serpents, bulls, or goats; wine goblets and sacred drinking cups. Craft a sacred thyrsus, adorn yourself in garlands of Ivy or Grapevine, and dance in devotion to the earth.
Learn the frame drum or dance to ancient drum rhythms of your ancestors.
Attend an ecstatic dance session or seek out an expressive movement class. Find spaces and places where freestyle movement and dance is encouraged.
Explore altered states of consciousness through plant medicine and/or movement. This is best navigated with a guide, someone trained in the art of sacred intoxication, especially when ingesting new substances (alcohol, herbs, or mushrooms).
Like the Lampades, the Maenads can be called upon as guides for shadow work: facing the fearful, hated, or rejected parts of yourself. The Maenads are especially strong allies when integrating your animalistic, aggressive, or violent aspects of yourself.
Primal scream. Find spaces where you can safely unleash your sensuality and/or rage, and embrace your ravenous, animalistic nature.
