The Nereids Are Calling to You.
The Nereids: Nymphs of the Sea
The Nereids are nymphs of saltwater, steady as a current, yet changing like the tide. They are guardians of the sea — its surface waves and its underwater depths. As embodiments of the Element of Saltwater, the Nereids’ power is evident in the crashing of waves and the unyielding undertow, just as it can be found in the calm, dark stillness of the uncharted deep. They share the peaceful bounty of the sea with fisherfolk and they protect seafarers, explorers, and sailors. But they just as easily swallow wayward ships and drown coastal villages with great waves of destruction. They impart their riches as surely as they take them away.
The sea nymphs’ wisdom is in the flow. They can be wild and unpredictable, but there is also a steady rhythm to their moods: an ebb and flow that can be charted like the tide. If anything, they can be trusted to remain constant in their ever-changing undulation.
If the Nereids are calling to you, it may be time to explore the role of Change and Flow in your life. Dynamic, curious, and adventurous, the Nereids have much to teach you about the mercurial nature of life. Keep reading below to discover how you can deepen your communion with the Nereids and invite them into your daily practices and ceremonies.

Where to Seek the Nereids
The Nereids dwell in saltwater: the oceans and seas. They inhabit the waves and seafoam, the dark currents and hidden depths, the coastal and underwater rocks and sand. All underwater plants and creatures are their companions and their presence can be felt beside dolphin and fish, octopus and seahorse, seaweed and coral. Find them in the sea-spray of coastal regions, islands, and hidden seaside coves.
How to Connect with the Nereids
Seek the sea or ocean. Visit barren rock or sandy shore and explore the boundary where land meets water. Allow yourself to be hypnotized by the steady thrum of waves against the coast as you contemplate the lessons of the Sea.
Immerse yourself in saltwater naked and experience your body untethered, raw as the day you were born. Float. Let yourself be held, suspended. Notice the effortlessness of saltwater buoyancy. Feel your vulnerability, surrounded by the shifting power of the waves.
Swim, dive, experience the depths. With your head underwater, listen. If possible, open your eyes and see. Hum or sing underwater and experience the sound of your vocalization beneath the waves. How is your experience of your senses different under the surface?
Like the tide, reflect on the shifting nature of your feelings and thoughts. Notice how your whole life is governed by tides and phases. Even in a single day, how does your mood shift? How does your energy rise and fall? Imagine your life so far as an ebb-and-flow of power, direction, and purpose.
Create an altar or sacred space in your home to honor the Nereids. Decorate it with symbols and items sacred to them, like shells, sea stones, or sand. In fact, any items found on the beach (whether they originate from beneath the waves or have been washed ashore) have been touched by the Nereids and can be added to your altar, as with any tools used for sea navigation or travel (such as the compass, rope, or replica of a ship).
Learn about the coastal regions nearest to you. What creatures and plantlife inhabit the waters? What can you learn about their needs, their habits, their history? How might you best support them with your time, money, or skills? (For example, you may donate to a coastal rejuvenation organization or go solo to clean up the beach with a trash bag and gloves.)
Educate yourself about the sea or ocean traditions of your ancestors. Were they seafaring people? Did they gather their sustenance from the seas — either via fishing, diving, or trade? Did they make tools, instruments, jewelry, or art from sea treasures? Are there any traditions or tools you can incorporate into your own practices?
Imagine living in a time when the sea would have marked the edge of the world. If you have ancestors who lived along the coasts, contemplate how the sea may have represented a primordial or mystical barrier to them. What would it have been like to be the first of your people to step onto a ship and sail into the unknown?
Notice if you are being called to embark on a journey. This could be a physical quest or an internal odyssey. Following the lessons of their element and the Summer Season, the Nereids may be inviting you to push past your boundaries and explore new identities and places. How might the Nereids inspire or accompany you on your trip? Might they be encouraging you to adventure forward with a go-with-the-flow attitude? How might you learn to ride the waves of the unknown and welcome unfamiliar experiences with a sailor’s resilience and dolphin’s curiosity?
Contemplate the dark lessons of the sea. Reflect on the murky waters, the violent undercurrents, the shameful or scary questions you may be avoiding. What monsters lurk in the depths of your own soul? Take an honest inventory of your own role in harmful, destructive, or challenging events of your past and present.
Call upon the Nereids to accompany you on your Shadow journeys. Remember, they already fearlessly explore the darkest, coldest depths of the ocean. How might they act as wise guides for excavating the sunken and shipwrecked parts of you or your past?
